I am so confused as to how you can have a file that is 0 bytes and 48.6 GB. Highly confused.

Exactly.
In short, it’s a bug in Windows Explorer. Explorer XP (a 3rd party utility) revealed the true size of the file. but the ‘delete’ dialogue box is the standard Windows Explorer one, which was telling me a filthy lie.
